BOSTON, MASS.- Two original film reels of The Godfather originating from the personal estate of Mario Puzo will be auctioned by Boston-based
RR Auction.
The reels were found while cleaning in the attic by the current homeowner who had purchased the home from Mario Puzos heirs in 2005, according to a letter that accompanies the sale.
Like the majority of spectators at The Godfathers Loews State Theatre premiere on March 15, 1972, the films debut marked the first instance author Mario Puzo would see his famed novel come to life.
Although Puzo and director Francis Ford Coppola would go on to share a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, the pair often disagreed over the direction of the screenplay. Coppola, one of Hollywoods most popular scribes, and fresh off winning an Oscar for his 1970 screenplay for Patton, was ultimately granted final rewrite duties by Paramount executives. In an attempt to stay on production schedule, the same executives barred Puzo from viewing any of the final cuts or edits.
Approximately consisting of the films first 40 minutes, these reels exist as a unique, potentially never-before-seen keepsake gifted exclusively to the works creator.
Its a remarkable offering of celluloid history, said Robert Livingston, Executive VP at RR Auction.
Both reels are housed in the original vintage industrial grade Paramount Pictures hinged film reel case.
The metal safety stock film reels measure 14.5″ in diameter, and are encircled with their original string-bound Paramount Picture strip labels, identifying the reels as 1 and 2 of a set of 9 ½. The strip labels on both reels read: Title of Picture, Godfather, Print Letter, TP 616, Production No. 8049, and are stamped San Francisco on splicing directions.
