Legendary Hungarian posters of some of the greatest masterpieces of cinema history will go under the hammer
Tibor Helenyi, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Hungarian version.

BUDAPEST.- Budapest Poster Gallery’s 6th online auction is taking place on Sunday, January 31, 2016, 11 a.m. PT and will be accessible worldwide on www.liveauctioneers.com. The gallery offers a unique selection of 221 genuine vintage Hungarian posters, out of which 136 are movie posters designed for some of the greatest masterpieces of cinema history. Click here to see the catalogue.

Thanks to the forthcoming auction, many of the greatest posters will be available both for collectors and the general public. A collection of rarities will be presented; a compilation of Hungarian posters of a great value that has never been on offer before at one auction.

The sale will include numerous outstanding works, including the 1 sheet Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back poster by Tibor Helényi, a famous artist, who created stunning designs for the Hungarian releases of many important science fiction movies. Further highlights include posters for Planet of the Apes, Close Encounters of the Third kind, Singin’ in the Rain, Rocky, The Graduate, West Side Story, 2001 Space Odyssey, Fahrenheit 451, The Mummy’s Hand, 8 ½, Some Like it Hot, or the pre-War poster of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and many others. In most cases, these are the desirable 1 sheet posters, and the condition of the pieces in general is outstanding as well.

Another exciting feature of the event is that two different styles of several movie posters will be auctioned. In 1980s Hungary, besides the main distributor, also responsible for advertising, a movie theatre Kecskemét, a city in central Hungary had its own printing house, designing, printing and distributing their own posters for movies. These were wildly different from the original poster styles, which were mostly made in Budapest. All these posters were only made in the smaller, A2 half sheet size. The participants of this auctions will have a chance to get two different posters for movies such as Alien, Robocop or Terminator.

Besides movie posters, circus, theatre, event, exhibition, propaganda, sport, commercial and travel posters will also be offered, including famous and rare propaganda pieces such as ‘We'll finish the fascist beast in its own cave’ by Sándor Ék, or beautiful travel posters; for instance Summer Hotel Balaton, by Győző Szilas.
