SAN ANTONIO, TX.- Artpace San Antonio begins the 2015 Fall International Artist-In-Residence Program with artists: Larry Bamburg of Marfa, Texas; Marie Lorenz of New York City; and Cally Spooner of London. The artists began their residency at Artpace on September 14, and their works created during their residency opened to the public with free exhibitions on November 12.

Each year, the International Artist-In-Residence program invites three guest curators to select three artists each (one working internationally, one working in the United States, and one in Texas) to conceive and create pivotal works of art. The mission of the program is to provide artists with unparalleled resources that allow them to experiment with new ideas, take provocative risks, and realize innovative and ambitious new artworks.

This fall's guest curator is Cecilia Alemani, the Donald R. Mullen, Jr. Curator & Director of High Line Art, which is presented by Friends of the High Line, curator of one of the most popular linear parks and tourist destinations in New York City. Alemani is also the curator of Frieze Projects, presented during the Frieze Art Fair in New York.

2015 Fall International Artists-In-Residence:

Larry Bamburg of Marfa, Texas: Bamburg, who was formerly based in NYC and is a recent transplant to Texas, experiments with elements of the natural world, resulting in sculptural works. Bamburg's solo exhibition BurlsHoovesandShells at Simone Subal Gallery in New York was included in Jerry Saltz's "The 10 Best Art Shows of the Year" in New York Magazine. His wife, Jenny Moore, heads the Chinati Foundation in Marfa.

Marie Lorenz of New York City: Lorenz explores urban waterways, collecting and documenting found objects and recording them in different ways, such as printing, casting, or making videos. In a recent exhibition at Artpace, Lorenz attempted to navigate the San Antonio Riverwalk in a boat she made herself. Lorenz also operates a water taxi in NYC where she rows tourists down the Hudson River.

Cally Spooner of London: Spooner uses theory, philosophy, pop music, and current affairs in her writing and performance. She produces plotless novellas, disjunctive scripts, looping monologues and musical arrangements to stage the movement and behavior of speech in contemporary culture. Her work satirizes pop culture figures (i.e. Tiger Woods, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, etc.).

While in residence, the artists are encouraged to share their ideas and become involved with the Texas art communities. Public programs, including a community welcome dinner on September 24, as well as the opening reception and artists’ dialogue on November 12, serve to connect audiences with Artpace resident artists.
