LONDON.- A late 19th century French 'Japonisme' Ormolu stand, attributed to the French luxury goods manufacturer, Maison Marnyhac, highlights a selection of Furniture and Works of Art that includes items from the private collection of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Redford. Held by Roseberys London on Wednesday 9 September the Furniture and Works of Art will comprise part of their Quarterly Fine Art Auction.

Maison Marnyhac, was the commercial name for la Société des Marbres et Bronzes Artistiques de Paris, a company known throughout the 19th and 20th centuries for being creators of luxury objects. Established under the direction of Charles de Marnyhac in Paris in the mid-19th century it was listed at two addresses in the Avenue de l'Opéra and the Rue de la Paiix, where they engaged the best designer-decorators to work in their premises. They were well-regarded as masters of design and craftsmanship, with a repertoire that spanned all styles and all eras including Pompeian, Chinese and Japonisme, for which they are very well known.

It is thought the present stand was designed by the draftsman, painter, illustrator, engraver, decorator and French cabinetmaker Edouard Lievre (1829-1886) who was credited with creating a combination Sino-Japanese style of design at the end of the 19th century as the Aesthetic movement was emerging. The stunning stand is mounted with a late 19th/early 20th century satsuma bowl. Standing at 111cm high it is estimated to sell for £20,000-30,000. [Lot 1033]

Roseberys will be offering for sale a small collection of 56 items from the private collection of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Redford. William Redford was one of London's leading 20th century continental furniture dealers, specialising in French furniture and Objets d'Art. Based at 9 Mount Street, Mayfair, London, Redford was known internationally for his integrity as a dealer, and his generosity to his colleagues in the trade. As well as stock from his London shop, William Redford acquired an exceptional personal collection of fine art which has been dispersed at auction over the years; particularly since his death in 2004 at the age of 91. A discerning collector, Redford had an outstanding eye for items of quality, and the collection is A French 'Japonisme' Ormolu stand, attributed to Maison Marnyhac, late 19th century, mounted with satsuma jardinièrehighlighted by a 19th century French Louis XVI style ormolu jardinière, which is estimated to sell for £800-1,200. Elsewhere in the section, a pair of beautifully preserved 19th century Sèvres ormolu mounted porcelain vases with matching oval comport are expected to attract attention. The Sèvres factory is known for its prolific and diverse production of porcelain during the 19th century, which reflected the changes in French society of the time. Unlike many of their contemporaries, they managed stay at the vanguard of European ceramic production, despite the array of changes in technology, taste, and patronage that occurred during this turbulent century. Much of the factories output during this period reflected the popular ‘Empire Taste, a Napoleonic Neoclassical style, which incorporated extensive gilding, rich border designs, and elaborate figural scenes, designed to promote his regime.

Painted with reserves of ladies and swains in pastoral scenes, and landscapes to the verso, within raised paste gilded cartouches, the vases and comport are superb examples of Sèvres manufacturing from this period. Signed Lancry the three items are estimated to sell for £5,000-8,000. [Lot 912]
