Seattle Arts Commission Seeks Artist

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.- The Seattle Arts Commission and Seattle City Light seek to commission an artist to work as Artist-in-Residence to create an art plan for Seattle City Light that will enhance the utility's role in the community and further its commitment to improving the quality of life for people throughout Seattle. Applications must be received at the Seattle Arts Commission office, 312 First Avenue North, Second Floor, Seattle, Washington, 98109 by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2002. Postmarks are not acceptable as proof of meeting the deadline. Applications may be downloaded from the Seattle Arts Commission Web site at www.cityofseattle.net/arts/funding/calls.htm . Those unable to obtain the application online may call 206-615-1801 for an application by mail. An artist will be commissioned to work with employees at Seattle City Light to identify and develop new art project(s) for themselves and for other future artists, within the regular functions of the utility. The artist will be charged with creating a connection between Seattle City Light and the community at large by developing an art project or projects dealing with energy, energy conservation and natural resource management, and identifying possibilities for future artists' involvement in City Light facilities and operations. The artist will survey anticipated capital improvement projects at City Light for opportunities to develop related artworks. Additional information about the scope of the project is outlined in the application, available at www.cityofseattle.net/arts/funding/calls.htm . This program is open to established professional visual artists living in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The Seattle Arts Commission encourages artistic diversity. Artists whose work is well-represented in the City's collection are eligible to apply for any commission; however, the artist selection panel will be asked to consider artistic diversity as one factor in selecting artists for commissions. A total of $20,000, plus a travel stipend for out-of-town artists is available for the residency period. A budget of approximately $300,000 will be identified for implementation of artwork projects by the artist and/or other artists to be selected in the future. Seattle City Light, a publicly-owned utility, offers the greenest, most reliable electricity in urban America. The department has numerous facilities, including generating stations, service centers, offices and electrical substations in Seattle and surrounding areas, and employs a work force of approximately 1,800 people in order to accomplish its goals. The Seattle Arts Commission stimulates a diverse and lively arts environment that draws on the full potential of artists, reflects and responds to civic concerns and aspirations, and enriches the lives of all members of our community.
