LONDON, ENGLAND.- A man charged with damaging a priceless Renaissance painting at the National Gallery was remanded in custody today. Paul Lennon, 36, of no fixed abode, will next appear at Horseferry Road Magistrates’ Court, central London, on November 13. He is accused of criminal damage after allegedly trying to slash Bronzino’s Allegory With Venus And Cupid yesterday. The 1.5 metre high by 1 metre wide oil on wood image, thought to have been created between 1540 and 1550, shows the nude figure of Venus being kissed by Cupid. Other characters represent time, jealousy, despair, jest, folly, pleasure, deceit, fraud and oblivion.
