MONTE CARLO.- Many art fairs have a reputation for being somewhat ostentatious. From the renowned Artissima fair in Turin, to the cutting-edge NADA exhibition that takes place in Miami, art fairs are a great way for collectors and art enthusiasts to share their passion for the visual arts in a luxurious arena.

But when it comes to sheer opulence, few art fairs come close to Art Monaco. Now in its sixth year, the event organisers Opus Eventi will hold the highly anticipated art fair from July 9 to 12 in the exquisite location on the French Riviera.

The delights of the French Riviera
The area has a fantastic reputation for its contribution to the art world with a host of famous painters including Chagall, Cezanne, Picasso and Signac all flocking here to sample the wonderfully clear natural light.

It's a great place to go for art enthusiasts with Renoir's house now being open as a museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, as well as the beautifully located grave of Matisse nestled in the hills of Cimiez.

The famous Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch also spent a lot of time in Monte Carlo where he not only painted some highly notable works, but also developed something of a passion for gambling. The city-state of Monaco is something of a hot bed for world-class casinos, so if you fancy following in the footsteps of Munch, it may be worthwhile to get some live chips counting action before heading out in order to maintain your credibility!

Art fair highlights
Although Monaco is the second smallest country in the world, it more than makes up for its size by the sheer splendour offered by the Art Monaco fair. With more than 10,000 people expected to attend, it's a great way for art enthusiasts to leisurely explore new works in a luxurious, yet friendly environment.

Last year's fair was declared to be a massive success with more than 70 different international galleries displaying their works. Such galleries included the distinguished Pashmin Art Gallery from Germany, and there was also an emphasis on photographic works with the likes of Kristian Schmidt rubbing shoulders with the extravagant Mauricio Velez.

This year the three-day exhibition will feature some of the most globally sought-after artists with more than 4,000 art pieces on display for sale and exhibition.

And whilst many of the price tags of the artworks may raise a few eyebrows, it's still a great way to catch up with the contemporary art scene and soak up the heady atmosphere of this playground for the rich and famous.
