LOS ANGELES, CA.- Regen Projects is presenting its second solo exhibition with Danish-born, New York-based artist Sergej Jensen.

Primarily known for his minimalistic works, in which non-painterly materials and textile supports were employed as the main subject, Sergej Jensen for the first time presents a new group of works that entirely shows a figurative type of painting.

While referring to motifs drawing back to old etchings and classical canvases, the works combine these sources in an unconventional way. Using unsaturated acrylic paint that is applied in an either plastic or fluid manner the paintings deal with art history and its reception at the same time. Where the self-reflexive gesture of his former paintings established a comment on modernism and its negation these new works take up an involvement with the construction of painting again that fully embraces the color and textures of its motifs.

Sergej Jensen’s work has been the subject of numerous solo museum exhibitions internationally including Berlinische Galerie, Berlin (2013); MoMA PS1, Long Island City (2011); Portikus, Frankfurt (2010); Aspen Art Museum, Aspen (2010); KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2009); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2008); Malmö Konsthall, Malmo (2008); and Kunsthalle Bergen, Bergen (2008). His work is held in several museum collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate Modern, London; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Jensen lives and works in New York City.

The exhibition coincides with the gallery’s 25th anniversary. To mark the occasion a publication documenting the gallery’s history and featuring texts by art historian George Baker, curator Ann Goldstein, architect Michael Maltzan, and Shaun Caley Regen will be available for purchase at the gallery. Published in association with Prestel (January 2015 / $75.00).
