For collectors of Chinese Export Silver, a companion online-only sale, From East to West: The Confluence of Cultures in Chinese Export Silver, will open for bidding from October 16 –28. Just as Chinese potters produced porcelain for Western consumers in the 18th and 19th centuries, Chinese silversmiths also created elaborately decorated objects for international clients. The comprehensive collection spans early works by Canton silversmiths working in Western styles, later 19th century silver exuberantly decorated with Chinese motifs such as dragons, bamboo, and Chinese landscapes, and 20th century pieces representative of Shanghai’s Jazz Age heyday.
