SAN DIEGO, CA.- The San Diego Museum of Art welcomes the arrival of Gauguin to Warhol: 20th Century Icons from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, an exhibition that traces the path of Modern art through iconic 20th century works from the renowned collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y. Featuring masterpieces from the most significant names in art, the exhibition opened at The San Diego Museum of Art on October 4, 2014 and runs through January 27, 2015.
Artists featured in the exhibition include Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Georgia OKeeffe, Salvador Dalí, Frida Kahlo, Paul Gauguin, Francis Bacon, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko, among others. More than 70 paintings and sculptures have been grouped thematically, spanning modern movements from Post-Impressionism to Pop. Gauguin to Warhol makes its only West Coast stop at The San Diego Museum of Art.

Significant works on view include Paul Gaugins Spirit of the Dead Watching,1892, one of the artists famed Tahitian paintings; Vincent Van Goghs The Old Mill (1888); Henri de Toulouse-Lautrecs Woman Lifting her Chemise, 1901; Pablo Picassos La Toilette, 1906, a masterpiece of the artists Rose Period; Salvador Dalís The Transparent Simulacrum of the Feigned Image, 1938; Frida Kahlos Self-Portrait with Monkey, 1938; Henri Matisses La Musique,1939, painted at the height of his career; Jackson Pollacks Convergence, 1952, a monumental work and one of the artists most recognized drip paintings; Willem de Koonings Gotham News, 1955, a masterwork of his mature style; and Andy Warhols 100 Cans, 1962, the most iconic of his Campbells soup can paintings.
The Albright-Knox Art Gallery houses one of the worlds greatest collections of modern and contemporary art. Throughout its history, visionary leaders and donors have led the institution in the acquisition of seminal works of Post-Impressionism, Abstractionism, Surrealism, Minimalism and Pop. This exhibition marks a rare opportunity for The San Diego Museum of Art to share these masterpieces with the San Diego community and the Western United States.
