The Biennale of Sydney Looks for Curator

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.- The Biennale of Sydney is inviting expressions of interest for the role of Curator for the 15th Biennale of Sydney in 2006. The closing date for proposals is Friday 31 October 2003. Proposals should be sent to: administration@biennaleofsydney.com.au or posted to Biennale of Sydney, 43-51 Cowper Wharf Road, Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, 2011, Australia.

The Biennale of Sydney is inviting expressions of interest for the role of Curator for the 15th Biennale of Sydney in 2006.

The Biennale of Sydney was created in 1973 with an aim to present an international program that challenges traditional thinking and encourages new levels of enthusiasm for contemporary art within the unique context of Sydney. The Biennale of Sydney’s rationale is to bring to Australia innovative and exciting contemporary work from around the world and to present Australian work in an international context.

Requirements: The Biennale of Sydney requires a short proposal of 1-2 pages for the 2006 event.

The proposal should consider cultural diversity, acknowledging the geographical and historical position of Australia. The Biennale is particularly interested in a focus upon the expanded international field of contemporary art practice, and strategies for articulating diversity through an exhibition. Proposals from both individual curators and curatorial teams are welcome.

The Curator for 2006 will have a proven curatorial track record in international contemporary art and a demonstrated ability to develop an exhibition that will have critical acclaim and public appeal. They will also have established networks in international cultural and artistic circles with the ability to draw on these to deliver the event, as well as a strong commitment to education and public programs. The Curator should have the capacity to create an event which will distinguish Sydney internationally, and which acts as a creative and professional catalyst for Australian artists and curators. The Curator will be a spokesperson for the Biennale of Sydney locally and overseas, and will build relationships with both public and private sectors.

Selection process: The submission of initial proposals will be followed by an invitation to shortlisted candidates to present a developed proposal in November, followed by interviews in Sydney in February 2004. The appointment will be finalised in March 2004.

Deadline: The closing date for proposals is Friday 31 October 2003.
Proposals should be sent to administration@biennaleofsydney.com.au or posted to Biennale of Sydney, 43-51 Cowper Wharf Road, Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, 2011, Australia.
