BETHEL, NY.- On August 28th, the
Museum at Bethel Woods will unveil its fall special exhibit, Speak Truth to Power, a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Stirring and insightful, the photographic exhibit from the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights features powerful portraits of human rights defenders from around the world. On display from August 28th through December 31st. Admission is only $5.00.
Speak Truth To Power features 50 portraits of leaders and activists by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Eddie Adams, alongside interviews conducted by Kerry Kennedy, President of the RFK Center. Among the courageous activists celebrated in Speak Truth To Power are Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama, and Elie Wiesel. Works of art, these moving portraits are an introduction to issues as varied as political rights, nuclear disarmament, mental health, environmental activism, and children’s rights.
Kerry Kennedy, who interviewed the human rights defenders featured in the exhibit, calls the exhibition, “a sympathetic and strength-giving portrait of the power of personal resolve and determination in the face of oppression and injustice.”
Speak Truth to Power is an apt complement to the Main Exhibit at the Museum at Bethel Woods which not only explores the unique experience of the Woodstock festival, but provides an in-depth study of the 1960s, a decade of radical cultural transformation. A global landmark visited by tens of thousands annually, The Museum presents exhibitions ranging from iconic rock & roll images and memorabilia to more profound historical retrospectives, expanding upon the impact of a critical era in American history.
Also supporting the opening of the exhibit will be a screening of the film Dead Man Walking, starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. The film is part of a year-long series that celebrates and expands on the themes and content of the museum’s permanent and special exhibits. Admission to the films is $8.00 regular admission. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. show time.
