NEW YORK, NY.- Hirschl & Adler Modern announces the opening of an exhibition of paintings by renowned New York artist Stone Roberts on Thursday, March 20th. The show will include major examples of figure paintings, interior and street scenes, still lifes and genre pictures.

Nearly a decade has passed since Roberts’ last major gallery exhibition in New York. Since then, the artist has produced some of his best works, and Hirschl & Adler Modern will debut a comprehensive selection of them as they officially welcome Stone to theirr stable of contemporary artists.

The long history of representational art continues to be of particular interest to Hirschl & Adler. Stone’s luminous still lifes, private interiors, and large-scale panoramas of figures in motion invite us to look—and then look some more—and relish in the sensuality of the three dimensional world.

While Stone’s varied influences include Greek Mythology and Roman Classicism, Dutch and Spanish Old Masters, Fantin-Latour, Ingres, and Balthus, his subjects are decidedly of today. From Grand Central Terminal to his wife gardening in Stonington, Connecticut, Stone paints people and places from his personal surroundings into formal compositions that often appear to have mythical, literary, or psychological elements.

The artist received his BA from Yale, where he studied painting with William Bailey, and his MFA from the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia and Rome, Italy. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe, including the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louis Dreyfus Family Collection, New York.

Stone Roberts opens on Thursday, March 20 and runs through Saturday, April 26, 2014.
