TORONTO, ON.- Waddington’s presents its annual Fine Prints and Photography Auction on March 11, 2014. Featuring 209 lots representing important artists from around the world, the auction includes prints by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Marc Chagall; graphics by Canadian aboriginal artists Bill Reid and Kenojuak Ashevak, and photographic works by Jock Sturges, Arthur Leipzig and Julius Shulman.

Linda Rodeck, Waddington’s Vice President of Fine Art says, “We are delighted to be able to make great art accessible; this auction provides a unique opportunity for both seasoned collectors and neophytes to acquire original works by major artists.” Susan Robertson, Waddington’s International Art Specialist, notes that this is one of the diverse auctions she has assembled with works by artists from over 20 countries.

Auction Highlights
John Lennon “Bag One” (lot 39) lithographs, estimate $20,000 – 30,000
Created in 1969 by John Lennon for Yoko Ono as a wedding gift, the Bag One Portfolio chronicled their wedding ceremony, honeymoon, and the Bed-In for World Peace. The portfolio gained notoriety when Scotland Yard confiscated eight of the pieces on its second day of exhibition at the London Art Gallery – on the grounds that they were indecent. The portfolio was published in a limited edition of 300 and each lithograph is hand signed by John Lennon.

Andy Warhol “Karen Kain” (lot 5) silkscreen on Lenox Museum Board with diamond dust, estimate $10,000 – 15,000
Karen Kain was at the peak of her celebrity in 1980, shortly after the Canadian prima ballerina had gained international fame as one of Rudolf Nureyev’s favourite dance partners, when Toronto lawyer William Hechter commissioned Andy Warhol to paint her portrait. Invited to Warhol’s famous ‘Factory’ studio, Kain was told “Andy wants your hair up tight in a bun…He wants white make-up with dark red lipstick.” Warhol quickly shot several Polaroid’s of Kain, from which the series of 200 vividly coloured silkscreens was created.
