LOS ANGELES, CA.- Los Angeles Modern Auctions, the fastest growing auction house in the modern and contemporary art world, is pleased to announce the date for its next auction:
Sunday, February 23, 2014; 12 p.m. (PST)
Vija Celmins Untitled (Meat), one of only four such works from 1964 to ever be offered at auction, will lead the Fine Art offerings in the February 23, 2014 Modern Art & Design Auction. In May 2013, LAMA broke the world auction record for any work on canvas by the artist with Untitled (Knife and Dish) from the same formative year, selling for $587,500. As a result, Untitled (Meat) surfaced in Los Angeles and will be sold by the original owner this spring. To commemorate this rare event, arts writer Jori Finkel will write a special essay to accompany the work in the auction catalogue.
Fifty commissioned designs by George Nakashima from the collection of Edmund J. Bennett will lead the design offerings in the upcoming auction. Spanning over 30 years, this collection has never been offered on the market, and includes photographs, ephemera, and correspondence between Nakashima and Bennett.
Additional highlights include works on paper by Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Motherwell, and Nancy Rubins; multiples by Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Ed Ruscha, Joe Goode, and Frank Stella; and sculptures by De Wain Valentine and Charles Arnoldi. In addition to designs by Pierre Jeanneret from the planned city of Chandigarh, India, as well as an assortment of Walter Lamb furniture, Charles and Ray Eames panels custom designed for the 1964 New York Worlds Fair, and a large selection of Scandinavian designs and ceramics.
