WAKEFIELD.- Toilet Project is a UK-wide public art programme by Korean artist Meekyoung Shin that sees works displayed in the bathrooms of Yorkshire Sculpture Park and 15 other galleries and museums across the United Kingdom between July and October 2013.

Shin’s statuettes are cast in palm-free vegetarian soap and as visitors use them to wash their hands the details of the statuettes soften and fade, creating the pieces’ own provenance and unique history.

Meekyoung Shin, who trained in Korea and London, is renowned for her recreation of reliefs in soap, expressing through the theme of 'translation' the religious, historical and cultural differences between the East and the West.

Shin’s method of translation involves recreating classic stone or marble sculptures with soap, a very soft and soluble material that disintegrates rapidly over time compared with sculpture made in traditional materials.

The items from Toilet Project will be on display at the Korean Cultural Centre, London in November 2013 where guests will be able to see how these statues have weathered over the three months that they were used by the public.
