LINCOLN, MASS.- DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum announced the 21 New England-based artists and collaboratives selected for The 2013 deCordova Biennial, opening October 9, 2013, and on view through April 13, 2014. This survey exhibition will emphasize the dynamism, variety, and quality of art-making in New England. Showcasing sculptors alongside filmmakers and performance artists whose practices traverse a wide range of subject matter, The 2013 deCordova Biennial will occupy nearly the entire Museum and extend into the Sculpture Park. The exhibition is a sprawling entity that demonstrates the active, ambitious art scene taking place across the region.
Occurring only a year and a half after The 2012 deCordova Biennial, the second installment of deCordovas regional showcase, The 2013 deCordova Biennial reflects the Museums new lengthened exhibition cycle, which is an outgrowth of deCordovas Strategic Plan and a response to visitor demands. The extended exhibition schedule will benefit visitors, who will have increased opportunity to revisit this large-scale group show.
For The 2013 deCordova Biennial, Assistant Curator Lexi Lee Sullivan conducted over 150 studio visits throughout the six states and reviewed the portfolios of many more artists in an attempt to explore the diverse scope of art-making in New England. Sullivan was aided in her process by an esteemed group of curators who served as Advisory Board contributors: Rachel Adams, Associate Curator, AMOA-Arthouse, Austin, TX; Nora Lawrence, Associate Curator, Storm King Art Center, New Windsor, NY; and Sarah Suzuki, Associate Curator, Department of Prints and Illustrated Books, MoMA, New York, NY.
