SZCZECIN.- TRAFO Trafostacja Sztuki is the first center for contemporary art in the north-west of Poland. It has been founded in an exceptional moment in the history of Szczecin, when the city is in the process of implementing a visionary development strategy as well as establishing its identity as a new artistic and cultural center.
TRAFO is a unique place in the heart of Szczecin. It is located in a renovated historic transformer facility in Świętego Ducha street. Designed in 1912, the modernist brick block seeks reference to the oldest church in the city, the Saint Johns church. Following the renovation (2012-2013), the well-equipped gallery rooms spreading over several floors enable versatile exhibition activities, while the impressive main hall provides a space for interdisciplinary audio-visual projects.
TRAFO takes advantage of its geographical potential the cross-border location within the Baltic Sea region and the immediate vicinity of Berlin, the cultural capital of this part of Europe. The center acts as a unique display window through which Szczecin confronts its artistic image with the world.
TRAFO follows in the footsteps of contemporary artists and takes an active part in the process of forming a new, experimental aesthetic quality. The center features and promotes local and international artists as well as organizes activities in the fields of education, publishing, international cooperation and artistic exchange.
TRAFO is not only a space devoted to art. It is also a café and bookshop, a place of social gathering and cultural exchange.
