EUGENE, ORE.- The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus commemorates 80 years with a new exhibition, “Living Legacies: The JSMA @ 80.” This exhibition celebrates the collectors and collections in the community that reflect the JSMA’s vision for the future. On view June 1 – September 1 in the Coeta and Donald Barker Changing Exhibitions Gallery, as well as other gallery spaces, the exhibition is accompanied by the museum’s first online catalog.

Featuring more than 250 works on loan from more than 80 collectors, the art on view reflects the museum’s own collecting strengths in Asian, Pacific Northwest, and American art as well as works that reflect the JSMA’s recently expanded collecting mission in the areas of European and Latin American art. In addition, Aboriginal, African, and Middle Eastern art, Silver Age American comics, and musical instruments reflect the breadth of collections in our community.

““Living Legacies: The JSMA @ 80” is probably one of the most unusual shows we’ve curated at the museum,” says Jill Hartz, JSMA executive director. “We’ve never had an exhibition drawn from so many lenders, nor have we – or our community – seen these works, mostly from private homes, on public view.”

In 2008, the JSMA presented “Lasting Legacies,” which celebrated the museum’s 75th anniversary, by featuring exceptional pieces from the collection and the museum’s founder and donors who made the JSMA what it had become to that date. Having honored the past at that juncture, the current “Living Legacies” exhibition is intended to both celebrate our community and to look to the future by showing how the museum’s collections have grown over the past five years.

Among the artists included in “Living Legacies” are Josef Albers, Jay Backstrand, Alexander Calder, Charles Heaney, Ishikawa Toraji, Manuel Izquierdo, Jung Do-Jun, Elizabeth Keith, Ellsworth Kelly, Kim Yikyung, Roy Lichtenstein, David McCosh, Cirenaica Moreira, Mori Yoshitoshi, Carl Morris, Lucinda Parker, Pablo Picasso, C.S. Price, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Frank Stella, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige, Wang Gongyi Andy Warhol, Edward Weston, James A. McNeil Whistler, and Jamie Wyeth.
