KARLSRUHE.- The ZKM presents in coproduction with the ABTART Gallery Stuttgart the next large-scale installation in the ZKM_Foyer. From March 02, Boris Petrovsky will be showing the installation The Wishful Matrix – a large-format, interactive matrix with over 500 luminous advertising letters.
The Wishful Matrix (You&Me-isms Part 2) is the second interactive installation, which the media artist Boris Petrovsky has realized for the ZKM | Center for Art and Media. A matrix comprising over 500 luminous advertising letters, arranged in a format of 20x6 meters, forms the central element of the monumental work. Drawn from the public sphere, the letters were then recombined by Petrovsky and provided with lightemitting diodes. Via an input station, on-site and via remote terminals positioned further away, the visitors were able to interact with the set of characters. Here, the program allowed for the entry of text messages into the system of up to 60 characters. The Wishful Matrix reacts like a light typewriter, and the letters light up sequentially. At the same time, the matrix of letters also communicates by itself. Gradually, the set of characters of the originally, economically determined communication was overwritten.

Boris Petrovsky (* 1967 in Constance) is a fine artist and media artist. His works focus on the connections between idea, sign, object and language in a world defined by media. The question as to the construction of reality is what characterizes his interactive installations, which, with the help of light, sound, and kinetics become alternate information carriers. Visitors communicate as users of the tangle of material and character sets of these works of material-electronics composition. Petrovsky’s work thus invokes a critical condition between tool, raw material and work, between chaos, cluster and form, between illusion, manipulation and conspiracy.
From March 02 in the ZKM_Foyer; March 07–10 remote terminals with camera-live transmissions on the “art KARLSRUHE” and, from March 22, in ABTART Gallery Stuttgart.
