SINGAPORE.- Sculpture Square presents "4th Anniversary Exhibition: Subverted Boundaries," on view through August 24, 2003. Over the centuries, Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore have forged deeply divergent cultural histories. These nations however share a common heritage in craft and the hand-made. Though the contemporary practices in Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore have taken different directions since the introduction of modernism, common threads can undoubtedly be discerned, particularly in the exploration of mass-media sources. A second common strand involves a shared interest in these societies’ respective craft cultures. “Hanoi-Bangkok-Singapore” aims to investigate how the practices of some of these countries’ artists of widely differing backgrounds can be compared in terms of process, use of materials and conceptual vision.
In the course of the exhibition, Sculpture Square will host the works of 9 contemporary artists from Hanoi, Bangkok and Singapore to mark its 4th anniversary. Targeted towards the general public (including schoolchildren), the exhibition will feature artworks that will represent a contemporary articulation and translation of the site at Sculpture Square, with the aims of broadening the understanding of 3-D art practices in the featured Southeast Asian countries.
In addition to the actual exhibition, Sculpture Square plans to organise workshops/talks and tours, both local and foreign, between the artists and the general public, to allow for the interaction and exchange of ideas about the art practices of Vietnamese, Thai and Singaporean artists.
