MADRID, SPAIN.- A new study attributed the painting “Penitent Magdalene” to Francisco de Goya. This work is part of the exhibition at the Fundación Lázaro Galdiano in Segovia, Spain. The scientific research was made before the exhibition. The exhibition is titled “Goya and the Goyesque at the Fundación Lázaro Galdiano.” In the 1970’s this work was discarded as a Goya work. The research was made by Mercedes Agueda, who is also the curator of the Galdiano exhibition. She states that the “Father of José de la Canal” is also by Goya and was made between 1808 and 1824.
Mercedes Agueda is an art history professor at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. She compared this work with other Goya works at the church of San Antonio de la Florida in Madrid. According to Agueda, the works coincide in several aspects such as the types of figures and the way the brushes were made.
According to Letizia Arbeteta, director of the Fundación Lázaro Galdiano, said that the work of Mercedes Agueda “is very well documented and not the fruit of intuition. The foundation has in its collection six works that universally accepted as those of Goya.”
The exhibition will be on view through August 31 in Segovia. According to Arbeteta, “thanks to the passion of Lázaro Galdiano for the work of Goya, he had at one moment more than 20 works that were once attributed to Goya. After some studies, some of them have been discarded as painted by Goya.”
