SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- The fine fall sale of Arms, Armor and Sporting Guns at Bonhams, November 12, will include some 400 lots of edged weapons, armor, antique American and European firearms and sporting guns.

Standing out in the sale will be a rare Parker Brothers A1 Special shotgun two barrel set, est. $60,000-80,000, and an important and previously undocumented American full stock flintlock rifle by Frederick Sell, circa 1810-1820, est. $30,000-50,000. Frederick Sell (1781-1869) of Littlestown, Pa., is widely regarded as one of the finest and most important of Pennsylvania rifle makers. He was the son of gunmaker Jacob Sell, and though apprenticed to his father, he also worked as a journeyman with George Eister, John Lechner and Adam Ernst, as noted by Joe Kindig, Jr. in Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in it's Golden Age. These associations helped Sell to refine his own designs and become, as Kindig asserts, “one of the great masters of Kentucky rifle making.”

Highlights will continue with a rare coffin hilt bowie knife by Gravely & Wreaks, est. $10,000-15,000 and a Winchester cartridge board, est. $8,000-12,000.

Edged weapons in the sale will include examples from the Bronze Age, the 17th century and military swords from the 18th through the 20th centuries. Antique firearms will include several factory engraved Colt percussion revolvers, Civil War carbines and a group of Edo Period Japanese matchlocks, of varying estimates.

Property from the Eddie Rickenbacker Saloon Collection will feature a pair of epaulets, owned by George Armstrong Custer, est. $15,000-25,000; a large firing model of a Krupp Model 1873 field gun with limber, est. $3,000-5,000, and 19th century American firearms.
