HAMILTON.- The Art Gallery of Hamilton opened the eagerly-anticipated AGH Design Annex, its satellite location in the heart of the James Street North Arts District. The new facility, which opened in July, enables the AGH to introduce new and different types of programming to Hamilton.

“The Design Annex is a vital new branch of the Art Gallery of Hamilton,” said Louise Dompierre, President and CEO, Art Gallery of Hamilton. “Here, people will be able to see experimental exhibitions, and discover new products, many of which will be made by local artists and artisans. Musicians will break new ground. And, people and organizations will be able to enjoy the space as a backdrop to their own functions.”

The Design Annex is best defined as a creativity lab where experimental exhibitions are mounted and small, intimate performances are held. These exciting programmes are complemented by the Art + Design Store which embraces the philosophy that good design can be found in all products for the home and office, the innovative Annex Unplugged acoustic world music series, and versatile venue rental space.

“City building is everyone’s responsibility,” said Ms. Dompierre. “The Art Gallery of Hamilton is proud to be part of the James Street North Arts District, excited about working with our neighbours and looking forward to adding to what’s happening on the street.”

“We are thrilled to be part of the team of people who worked hard to make the Design Annex a reality,” said Tim Potocic, founder of Sonic Unyon Records and the Supercrawl. “I'm personally thrilled to have the AGH open a location on James Street North and contribute to the vibrant scene taking place on the street. The Design Annex will add to the excitement and renewal of the core.”

Grand Drape, the inaugural Design Annex exhibition on view until September 1, was created by the artists’ collective WE-3 who were invited to create a site-specific work for the first show. The exhibition, a 30-foot exposed brick wall hung with poly curtains was informed by the architecture of the building. The curtains are laser-cut with a pattern inspired by the original tin ceiling. The piece is both an homage to local history and architecture, and an intriguing contribution to contemporary art and design.

“The Design Annex is an extraordinary initiative that will enable the Art Gallery of Hamilton to support new program opportunities with additional revenue streams,” said Filomena Frisina, Chair of the Art Gallery of Hamilton Board of Directors. “This model enables the Art Gallery of Hamilton to embark on transformative growth that will be self-sustaining and create a solid financial foundation for the Gallery as it evolves to create new ways to involve visitors of all ages, interests and abilities in meaningful experiences with works of art.”
