SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- HungryMan Gallery presents the exhibition, Dirty Pictures featuring the work of Chicago based painter Timothy Bergstrom and New York based photographer Nathaniel Ward. The “dirty picture” is one that is impure and incites lust. It challenges conventionality and creates something desirable outside the boundaries of what is acceptable.

Dirty Pictures explores what happens when an artist challenges the conventional forms of his practice. Both Bergstrom and Ward do this by exploring the spacial nature of surface. Bergstrom's practice revolves around the use of materials to blur the intention of his paintings. Layers of glue or plexiglass are used to create distance in his paintings, sometimes hiding unreadable text within a pastiche of color and texture. Ward, on the other hand, uses large format images to transform the flat quality of photography into works more referential of painting. This exhibition features photographs from Nathaniel Ward’s After the Women of Paradise Road series, in which he traveled to Las Vegas and photographed the windows of erotic magazine distribution boxes.

Timothy Bergstrom received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010 after receiving his BFA from The School of Visual Art in New York. He has been included in group shows at Green Gallery in Milwaukee, Ebersmoore, and Western Exhibitions in Chicago, as well as FFDG in San Francisco. In September 2010, HungryMan Gallery Chicago featured his work as a solo presentation.

Nathaniel Ward received his BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in the Department of Photography & Imaging Ward has exhibited internationally since 2005, including exhibitions at the Center for Architecture, Gulf + Western Gallery and Broadway Gallery in New York and as a part of independently curated group exhibitions at the SCOPE Art Show, Miami and Art at Kirchberg, Luxembourg. He received the Tobias Award for excellence in Photography and Imaging in 2005 and the Constantiner Fellowship in 2006. His photographs have been published internationally and his work featured online and an in various group shows.
