LOS ANGELES, CA.- Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) achieved strong prices for original modern paintings and sculpture in Sunday's auction, reinforcing LAMA as the auction house of choice for important 20th century original works. The June 26, 2011 Modern Art & Design Auction reached sales of $1.5 million selling 70.2% by lot and 71.5% by value.
Original paintings and sculpture by top-tier artists brought the highest prices in the auction.
Top lots include:
• Robert Rauschenberg Untitled (Combine) 1958 (Lot 155 est. 100,000 – 150,000) realized $93,750
• Alexander Calder Butterfly and Spiral (Lot 10 est. $35,000 – 45,000) went over estimate bringing $75,000
• Angel Botello Untitled (No. 1781) (Lot 369 est. $45,000 – 50,000) and Untitled (No. 1919) (Lot 370 est. $35,000 – 45,000) totaled $90,000
• Richard Anuszkiewicz Gilt Order (Lot 15 est. $18,000 – 25,000) sold for $40,625
• Milton Avery watercolor Pot Vendor (Lot 310 est. $30,000 – 50,000) achieved $37,500
• George Chann Clusters of Memories (Lot 90 est. $15,000 – 20,000) brought $26,250
• Karl Appel Composition #3 (Lot 137 est. $10,000 – 20,000) brought $20,000
LAMA also realized strong prices for rare design and decorative objects.
Top lots include:
• Paul Laszlo Decorated Screen (Lot 238 est. $20,000 – 30,000) realized $32,500
• Peter Muller-Munk hammered bowl (Lot 95 est. $15,000 – 20,000) achieved $26,250
• Sam Maloof collection of early designs totaled $53,750
• George Nelson “CSS” Unit (Lot 36 est. $4,000 – 5,000) brought $15,000
• Dieter Rams Stereo (Lot 39 est. $2,000 – 3,000) sold for $13,750
• Charles & Ray Eames Child’s Chair (Lot 41 est. $7,000 – 9,000) brought $13,750
Fresh, original works, unseen on the market for over a generation, attracted a global audience, resulting in strong attendance in the room, on the phones and on the Internet.
