EASTinternational 2003 at The Norwich Gallery

NORWICH, UK.- The Norwich Gallery at the Norwich School of Art and Design announces the exhibition “EASTinternational 2003,”on view from July 5 through August 23, 2003. The featured artists will be: Alex Frost, Alex Graham, Alex Pollard, Camilla Low, Caroline De Lannoy, Christopher Landoni, Christopher Wraith, Colin Lowe and Roddy Thomson, Craig Kucia, Elise Ferguson, Francis Lamb, Gareth Jones, Gregor Wright, James Pyman, Karla Black, Kate Davis, Lawrence Corby, Lorna Macintyre, Lynn Hynd, Mark Pearson, Markus Amm, Martin Poyner, Michael Stumpf, Nike Savvas, Peter McDonald, Richard Hughes, Ruth Claxton, Sara MacKillop, Simon Bloor and Toby Zeigler.
This EAST will have the largest number of artists since the mid 1990s. There are 30 exhibitors in 2003, compared with 20 exhibitors in 2002.
The selectors, Toby Webster and Eva Rothschild, have selected an exhibition that is in touch with the most contemporary practice in Scotland, England, Europe and the USA. Toby Webster is Director of the Modern Institute Glasgow. He was formerly a committee member at Transmission Gallery 1995-1997 and an Associate Curator at the ICA.
Eva Rothschild is a sculptor, born in Ireland, who teaches at the Slade School of Art. She was also a committee member at Transmission 1994-96. Recent exhibitions include ‘Peacegarden’ The Showroom London 2001, ‘My Head is on Fire but my Heart is Full of Love’ Charlottenborg Exhibition Hall Copenhagen 2002 and ‘Early One Morning’ Whitechapel Art Gallery London 2002.
EASTwork, funded by the Regional Arts Lottery Project, has enabled us to commission in 2002 a major outdoor golden sculpture, in metal and mixed media provisionally called Telstar by Matthew Houlding to be sited in Norwich. The sculpture will be launched with EAST 2003. Exhibition dates 5 July to 23 August 2003.
We have held three EASTdiscourses and the fourth will be held on Wednesday 2 April 2003 from 1.30 at the NSAD Duke Street Lecture Theatre, with the exhibitors for EAST 2003 and Andrew Hunt from Slimvolume. The discourses enable us to articulate the ideas around EAST to a wider public involving press, artists, curators and students.
‘Elsewhere’ is a new initiative which developed from the third EASTdiscourse to propose an annual meeting of regional curators to work to mutually develop the professional careers of artist in their regions. The second meeting is proposed in collaboration with VANE and A-N in Newcastle in autumn 2003.
