PARIS, FRANCE.- The Louvre presents "Visible Memories - Copper plates and engravings from the Chalcography Department of the Louvre. The great moments in the history of the Louvre’s Chalcography Department are highlighted in this exhibition. Founded on 12 May 1797 (23 Floréal An V on the Republican calendar), when several collections of copper plates assembled prior to the French Revolution were united, this "encyclopaedia of the visible" brought together the finest engravers in France up to the end of Louis XIV’s reign. Oscillating between avant-garde and academicism, the recent policy of commissioning engravings from the Chalcography studio attempts to allocate a more rightful place to contemporary art. Numerous classical and modern prints will therefore be on view. The exhibition was curated by Pascal Torres-Guardiola.
