MIAMI, FL.- At Art Basel Miami Beach, Hauser & Wirth will present key works by Ida Applebroog, Louise Bourgeois, Christoph Büchel, Martin Creed, Subodh Gupta, Roni Horn, Guillermo Kuitca, Lee Lozano, Paul McCarthy, and Jason Rhoades, among others.

The highlight of their presentation will be the Kabinett Exhibition, Jakub Julian Ziolkowski: Paintings, a selection of extraordinary new work by the young Krakow-based artist whose paintings were a critically praised highlight of the recent international survey ‘The Generational: Younger Than Jesus’, at the New Museum in New York.

The Kabinett will provide a focused look at Ziolkowski's universe - an aggressivly figurative, wildly colored phantasmargoria of what he calls ‘a universe of visions, reasons and impulses’.

The work of Jakub Julian Ziolkowski presents us with a fantastical universe pulsating with colour and energy, emotions and obsessions. The artist’s obsessive detailing reveals surreal narratives where one finds a vision of the world that reflects a truly unique position. Ziolkowski’s work outlines a highly personalized take on reality where the viewer is invited to immerse oneself as a means of possible escape. As part of Art Basel Miami Beach, Ziolkowski presents a group of new works on the theme of spirituality and asceticism. These new works are influenced by the artist’s recent visit to Vietnam where he sat for many hours observing rituals occurring in places of worship, such as gardens and pagodas. Ziolkowski depicts monks with long ear-lobes (a sign of wisdom) and burning hearts (a symbol of catharsis or death). He indulges in contemplation and meditates on how a lifetime of asceticism leaves its trace on the life of the monks. Figures with distorted faces depict the mystical concept of the eye of knowledge, a symbol of enlightenment, leading to inner worlds of understanding.

Jakub Julian Ziolkowski (born Zamosc, Poland, 1980) trained at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts, Faculty for Painting and Drawing, Krakow. He has had solo exhibitions at the Centre d’art Contemporain in Geneva (2009), at F.A.I.T. Gallery, Krakow (‘Demi Volte’, 2007), Hauser & Wirth London and Zurich (2006 and 2008 respectively) and the Academy of Fine arts, Krakow (2004). He lives and works in Krakow and Zamosc.
