SALINAS, CA (AP).- Two men who reported that millions of dollars worth of artwork was stolen from their California rental home are now suspects in the case.

Monterey County Sheriff's Cmdr. Mike Richards said Tuesday that Angelo Amadio and Dr. Ralph Kennaugh may be involved in a "criminal enterprise," but he didn't go into further detail.

Richards says they have been uncooperative and unable to produce evidence that the art exists.

The men reported the theft on Sept. 25 at the home in the wealthy enclave of Pebble Beach. They say works by Jackson Pollock, G.H. Rothe, Matisse, Miro, Rembrandt, Renoir, Van Gogh and others were taken.

They estimate their loss at about $80 million and have offered a $1 million reward for the return of the art.

The men allege the sheriff's office botched the investigation.
