CINCINNATI.- The Contemporary Arts Center is wrapping the columns of Kaplan Hall Lobby in wallpaper custom-created by Marilyn Minter for the upcoming show, Marilyn Minter: Chewing Color. The installation is being completed today. Stop by the CAC to see what Minter created for Cincinnati , and whet your appetite for Chewing Color!
An already established and celebrated artist, Minters show at the Contemporary Arts Center presents a unique lens on the artists work. This solo exhibition of recent paintings and photographs features the hyper-realistic work for which she is so well known, in thoughtful dialogue with the more abstract work she creates. It also includes the museum debut of Green Pink Caviar, the video that has gained fame playing on the MTV HD Billboard in Times Square and, most recently, accompanying Madonna on her current European tour.
Minters luminous enamel paintings and lush color photographs reveal the sometimes flawed, side of glamour. Saturated, slick and glossy, her work focuses sharply on a detail or moment of imperfection. It is the combination of technique, perspective, use of color and finishes, and the directness with which she treats her subject which provides such a fresh take on the topic of female beauty and empowerment.
Minter was born in 1948 in Shreveport, Louisiana, but lives and works in New York. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Florida in 1970 and a Master of Fine Art from Syracuse University in 1972. Recent exhibitions include the 2006 Whitney Biennial, SITE Santa Fe, Fotomuseum Winterthur, and a solo exhibition at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
