Demuth's Destinations On View at the Demuth Museum

LANCASTER, PA.- The Demuth Museum’s forthcoming exhibition, Demuth’s Destinations will explore the artist’s travels in the United States and abroad in relation to his ground breaking Modernist art. Following his study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Charles Demuth (1883-1935) made his permanent residence and studio in his family home in Lancaster, creating the vast majority of his art there. Yet the artist led a peripatetic lifestyle, traveling regularly to Philadelphia, New York and Provincetown. Demuth also made several trips to Europe throughout his life, including stays in Paris, London and Berlin.

This exhibition of works from the Museum’s permanent collection of Demuth’s art will examine the relationship between Demuth’s travels to these distinct cosmopolitan centers and his artwork. While his travels informed his art, Demuth did not typically create artworks while away from Lancaster. Rather, he participated in an international community of avant garde artists, writers and intellectuals. He took in the work of his European and American contemporaries and exhibited his own art in a variety of venues. Demuth’s local destinations will also be examined in the exhibition which will be accompanied by a walking tour guide and map to sites and structures in Lancaster that inspired his art.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 3, 2009 from 5-7 p.m. in conjunction with First Friday festivities. Regular Museum Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10-4 & Sunday, 1-4. Closed, Saturday, July 4, for the Independence Day Holiday.
