"Just A Moment, Please," A New L.A.-Based Public Art Project By Amely Spoetzl Presented By ArtLab21 |

LOS ANGELES, CA.- “Flower Power” came and went with the 1960s. But the power of flowers to transform time and space will find focus in “Just a Moment, Please,” a new public art project from German artist Amely Spoetzl. Presented by artlab21 of Santa Monica, Spoetzl’s new work will see flower dispensers placed for hour-long interludes at specific locations throughout Los Angeles, provoking reactions from passersby who may or may not be tempted to pocket petals, thus interrupting the linear experience of time through a split-second sequences of new associations.
“Just a Moment, Please” will coincide with the launch of “Beyond the Surface,” a new exhibition of paintings and objects to be shown at artlab21 at Bergamot station in Santa Monica, May 9-June 6, 2009. The exhibition will bring together the work of Spoetzl, Michael Sistig and So Young Park.
Central to “Just a Moment, Please” is Spoetzl’s use of public spaces to reflect the possibilities expressed in the title of her work. The artist will place self-designed acrylic flower dispensers on the floor or the wall at specific locations around Los Angeles, including the intersection Ocean Park Blvd and Main Street in Santa Monica, “Muscle Beach” at Ocean Front Walk between 18th and 17th St. and the intersection of Washington Blvd and Lincoln Blvd. in Marina del Ray. Additional locations are in development. Much like the locations themselves, Spoetzl’s dispensers will encompass a range of styles – round, tubular or square – with each relying force of gravity and the interest of passerby to keep the flowers flowing.
The medium of “Just a Moment, Please” is a departure for Spoetzl, who typically uses dried or preserved plant life and other materials in her work. May 9th will be the starting point for Los Angeles and later this year other international installations in Paris and London. The artist will be returning once each day to fill the dispensers with fresh jasmine, lilies and other flowers.
