LONDON.-The London-based Browse & Darby gallery presents an exhibition portraying Euan Uglow and it includes a sketch of "Striding Nude, Blue Dress" which portrays Cherie Blair, the wife of former British prime minister Tony Blair. Cherie Blair visited the gallery. It has been speculated that the Blairs purchased the sketch for £4,000, but the gallery has not confirmed this.
Charles Bradstock, the owner of the gallery, said, "It's the policy of the gallery that we keep our buyers' names secret. A lot of them don't want their names to be revealed. There has been a very good reaction to both works. We had a packed private viewing. Cherie Blair came before the private viewing to see them. She was interested, because she had never seen them before. They brought back memories. Her husband wasn't with her."
Euan Uglow passed away in 2000 at the age of 68. He was famous for his methodical and slow way of working and taking many measurements of his models. Uglow had given instructions not to have the work shown in public while Tony Blair was prime minister.
Euan Uglow and Cherie Booth had met through the future lord chancellor Derry Irvine, head of the chambers where she and Tony Blair received their barrister training. The Blairs named their oldest child Euan. The drawing was made in 1972 when Cherie Booth was 22 and had just graduated from LSE. The work depicts a the naked body of a young woman. Cherie Booths name is written alongside the drawing, with her London home telephone number at that time.
Charles Bradstock added, "The problem was that Cherie was a struggling lawyer at the time and Uglow was a famously slow painter. She couldn't spare enough time for him to complete the painting, so he used another model."
