AUSTIN, TX.- On Saturday, February 28, Art Alliance Austin's 6th annual Art Night Austin 09 revealed Jaclyn Pryor’s pink [unplugged], the 2009 commissioned artist project for Art City Austin. Cycling between the various art spaces on decorated bicycles, pink-clad couriers brought art to the streets as they delivered love notes in small glass bottles to recipients and revelers alike. The engaging performance at Art Night was an intimate glimpse of what’s to come.

At the upcoming Art City Austin 09, April 24-26, the incredible pink [unplugged] outdoor installation will feature an elaborate factory style set up allowing participants to write love notes to anyone in Austin. Bottled on site and delivered by bicycle, the notes will be the fruits of labor in the interactive performance piece featuring vintage typewriters, a matrix of pulleys, ropes, ladders and computers human-powered by pink bicycles! Delivery sites will be tracked and recorded on a large map in the factory, for all to see.

“pink [unplugged] is a way to connect all Austinites whether friends, loved ones, mere acquaintances or strangers,” explained conceptual artist Jaclyn Pryor. “This is an opportunity to showcase the labor of love, human-powered love, and the interconnectivity of love.”

Pink was originally commissioned by First Night Austin in 2007, but this year, for the first time ever, pink will go green. “pink [unplugged] is in line with Art Alliance Austin’s eco-friendly initiatives,” commented Meredith Powell, Art Alliance Austin’s executive director. “The installation will be entirely human-powered using bicycle energy to operate the computers and to courier the love notes.”

The mission of pink is to engage the local community in art- making while modeling and spreading a positive message of love and hope to the city. pink benefits the city by providing a free service through which community members can express their love and appreciation for one another. It also provides local artists, cyclists, youth, activists, and art enthusiasts the opportunity to volunteer and participate in the creation and implementation of a large-scale, community-based, and interdisciplinary art project, as pink requires the love and sweat and hundreds of volunteers to work and grow.

This year’s jurors who selected pink [unplugged] include Risa Puleo (Assistant Curator of American and Contemporary Art, Blanton Museum of Art), Margo Sawyer (Professor, MFA Sculpture, The University of Texas at Austin), and Denise Prince, (a multi-disciplinary artist commissioned by Art Alliance Austin in 2008 to produce “Celebrity Topiary”).
