Georgia Museum of Art Launches GMOA on the Move

ATHENS, GA.- Spurred by the construction of a new wing and renovation of its present space, the Georgia Museum of Art will embark on a 2-year series of offsite events and exhibitions called “GMOA on the Move,” with a kickoff party on March 3, 2009, following the ground-breaking ceremony for the addition.

GMOA on the Move will feature a series of events sponsored by the Young at Art committee of the Friends at the Georgia Museum of Art titled “The Art of,” celebrating creativity in areas beyond the traditional fine arts, such as gardening, cinema, brewing beer and more. Each event will take place at a venue that corresponds with the highlighted craft. On March 17,“The Art of: Brew,” will be held at the world-famous Terrapin Beer Company in Athens. A reception with refreshments and live performances will follow each “The Art of ”presentation.

The museum will continue to host various Family Days, films and workshops at participating Athens sites such as the Lamar Dodd School of Art, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and the Lyndon House Arts Center. On May 23, Athens families can attend Family Day: Sunny Sunflowers at the Botanical Garden. Families will be able to look at the flowers in the gardens and paint sunflowers together.

The museum will also host its third annual community outreach program, Art Adventures: Folk Art, from June 15 to July 17, which will allow children to create their own folk art influenced by the subjects, techniques and materials of featured folk artists. These one-hour workshops are held at community organizations in and around Athens-Clarke County.

In addition to in-state activities, GMOA on the Move includes ongoing traveling exhibitions around the United States. The American Scene on Paper: Prints and Drawings from the Schoen Collection is currently on view at the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, S.C., and will be until March 22. It will relocate to the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Ga., this summer. Passport to Paris: 19th- Century French Prints from the Georgia Museum of Art will also be on display this summer, at the Pensacola Museum of Art, Pensacola, Fla.
