GLOUCESTER, MA.- The
Cape Ann Museum will present an exhibition of the work of photojournalist Charles A. Lowe, opening on March 7 with a public reception from 3:00 p.m.5:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
In the introduction for the exhibition catalogue, Peter Watson, former editor of the Gloucester Daily Times, notes that Newspaper photographers need to have an eye for the news, an ear cocked to the police scanner and the eye of an artist. And exquisite timing, a sense of humor and that inexplicable ability to be unobtrusive while taking in-your-face photos of people who do, and who dont, want their picture taken.
Charlie Lowe was a photographer at the Gloucester Daily Times for 25 years. He shot fires, football games, parades, politicians, kids and fishermen, award nights and night meetings, triumph and loss. If it happened in Gloucester, Massachusetts in the years 1957 to 1981, Lowe shot it for the Gloucester Daily Times.
Lowes photography was honored 17 times by juries sponsored by the Associated Press and the United Press International News through news photography competitions in New England. In 1971 he won prizes in five different photo categories. Lowes prizewinners will be included in the exhibition.
The exhibition of 100-plus photos features the year 1975a year when Lowe shot 6,000 frames. The Museums entire Charles A. Lowe archive, donated by the Gloucester Daily Times, consists of approximately 40,000 frames. The archive has been electronically digitized by Fred Buck, the Museums photo archivist. Fred Buck and Peter Watson organized the exhibition.
Charles A. Lowe Photos: Gloucester 1975 will be on view through May 31, 2009.
