SHIBUYA, JAPAN.- The Bunkamura Museum of Art presents The Vienna Secession 1898 -1918, From Klimt to Schiele", on view through February 24, 2002. Represented by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, the Vienna Secession group was established at the end of the 19th century by progressive artists who aimed to create a new type of art, unrestrained by academic concepts. Not only painters, but also creators from a variety of fields such as the crafts and architecture, worked together to form a comprehensive art form suited to the times. The approximately 180 works of art and related items in the current exhibition exemplify the fusion of different plastic arts that is the prominent characteristic of the Vienna Secession genre. Also of interest is the internationalism of the group shown by the acceptance and introduction of foreign influences in paintings, crafts, and sculpture in addition to the graphic art created for publications and posters.
