EDINBURGH, UK.- Laura Lindsay, Head of Scottish Art sale and Director, British & Irish Art, Christies: Todays Scottish Art Sale at Edinburghs Assembly Rooms presented a wide range of paintings reflecting Scotland's rich heritage and spanning three centuries of work by key Scottish artists; from the 18th century through to the present day. We are thrilled with the continuing demand for Scottish Colourists reflected in the success of Roses, circa 1922 by Samuel John Peploe, R.S.A. (1871-1935) which far exceeded its pre-sale estimate and fetched £529,250, setting a world auction record for the artist and for any work by a Scottish Colourist. 18th century Scottish paintings from the Golden Age performed particularly well, led by a rare self-portrait by Allan Ramsay (1713 - 1784) which realised £289,250. The bustling auction saw bidding in the room, on the telephone and online using Christies Live from private clients, institutions and trade who were actively participating throughout. The solid results of this auction are a testament to the quality and provenance of the works offered.
