CHAMPAIGN, IL.- The Krannert Art Museum presents Out of Sequence: Underrepresented Voices in American Comics, on view through January 4, 2009. Recent attention to the history and development of comics and sequential art has been well-deserved and long overdue; however, it has also been limited in scope. Out of Sequence: Underrepresented Voices in American Comics seeks to showcase American sequential art that steps outside the traditional bounds of the medium. Two such boundaries are gender and race: Out of Sequence celebrates creators from underrepresented demographics, including women and minority comics creators, both historical and contemporary. The works in this exhibition also extend the boundaries of the comics form, embracing nontraditional techniques and experimental design and story elements. Thus, Out of Sequence is best described as a broad survey of women, small press, minority, independent, gay & lesbian, self-published, mini, underground, web and/or gallery comics creators; an exhibition of the unlimited potential of sequential art. Guest Curators: Damian Duffy and John Jennings.
Exhibition supported in part by the Office of the Chancellor, U of I; Office of the Provost and Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, U of I; Illinois Arts Council; Krannert Art Museum Directors Circle; and Krannert Art Museum Council.
