Former Nigerian President Stole Work

LONDON, ENGLAND.- A copy of an African bronze given as a gift to Queen Elizabeth II of England almost thirty years ago is really an original work. The piece was taken from the Lagos National Museum by the then general and Nigerian president Yakubu Gowon. In 1973 the Nigerian president visited the Queen and wanted to give her a replica of a Benin antiquity. General Gowon had commissioned a replica but did not like it and decided to take one from the museum himself. The work is a bust that dates to 1600.
