|

|
SEOUL.- The 5th Seoul International Media Art Biennale (media_city seoul 2008) is being held in Seoul Museum of Art until November 5, 2008. Seoul International Media Art Biennale has continued and prospered the event and its quality through the past four biennale since 2000, being much recognized both domestically and internationally as a notable media art festival.
Especially, this 5th biennale is significant in retracing prior exhibitions for the preparation of the next decade. Therefore it aims at asking fundamental and essential questions, such as "What is media art?", "What is the difference between traditional art and media art?," "What change in art has been caused from this?", and "What kind of effects will this bring?", and it will also attempt to find out the answers of these questions through the exhibition of various media artworks.
The theme of this year's biennale, 'Turn and Widen' is based upon the fact that media art has been greatly influential on changes and expansions of aesthetic experience by drawing and turning new forms of media into art. The exhibition categorizes the differences between the forms of traditional art and media art by organizing three different sections of related works.
First, the section of light will show artworks that demonstrate how images and effects of light can be expressed by electronic wave and undulation, and also artworks that present the change of art caused by the appearance of light using high technology beyond the level of natural light.
Secondly, the section of communication displays artworks that present various aesthetic experiences including the sense of hearing, the sense of smell, and the sense of touch, not only limited to the sense of sight and also artworks that show the change in experience of reality through the introduction of Virtual Reality to the artwork.
Lastly, the section of time deals with artworks including motion using high technology and also artworks with the theme of change of images, changeability of images and fluidity of images following the passage of time. Video art and animation developing a story according to the passage of time is also exhibited in this section.
