Sotheby's Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Department Welcomes Dr. Caroline Schulten and Christina Prescott-Walker

NEW YORK.- Sotheby’s is pleased to welcome Dr. Caroline Schulten as Head of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Sales, North America, and Christina Prescott-Walker as Department Director of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, New York.

Nicolas Chow, Worldwide Head of Sotheby’s Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art department, said: “We are thrilled to have this new team in place in New York. Caroline and Christina bring both valuable expertise and auction experience which will further strengthen our established worldwide team.”

Caroline Schulten joined Sotheby’s London in September 2007 as the senior specialist in Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art. Prior to joining Sotheby’s she spent two years at the auction house Lempertz in Cologne, Germany, as their specialist in Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art. Before getting into the auction business, Caroline spent four years in her native Germany, serving two years as the assistant curator of Chinese Art at the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin, preceded by two years as a lecturer and tutor in Chinese Art and Archaeology at the Freie Universitat Berlin. She received her MA at Ludwig Maximilians Universität, Munich and her PhD from the University of Oxford.

Christina Prescott-Walker will take on the management of the Chinese Works of Art Department, New York, whilst continuing as Head of Department for European Ceramics and Chinese Export porcelain, New York, a role she has held since 1998. Prior to this position, Christina spent four years in Sotheby’s London Ceramics and Glass Department where she was Deputy Director. She began her career at Sotheby’s in the Sussex Ceramics Department in 1989 and became an auctioneer in 1991.

Dr. Schulten and Ms. Prescott-Walker join a strong international team which includes Nicolas Chow, Worldwide Head of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art; Mee-Seen Loong, Senior Specialist, New York; Sam Shum, Senior Specialist, Hong Kong; Robert Bradlow, Head of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, London; Stephen Loakes, Senior Specialist, London; and Christian Bouvet, Head of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, Paris.

Sotheby’s is also pleased to announce the appointment of Fanny Hsu, Senior Specialist, Taipei. For the past seven years, Fanny has served as gallery director for the reputable New York dealer JJ Lally & Co. Oriental Art. She brings with her a wealth of expertise, and will focus on continuing to develop the market for Chinese art in Taiwan as well as lend support to the New York team, given her solid understanding of the American market. Fanny received her MA from New York University.

Additionally, the worldwide team will continue to be supported by consultant, Regina Krahl, one of the world’s most respected authorities on Chinese ceramics. From 1991 to 1994, Regina was Acting Curator of Chinese Ceramics at the British Museum, London, with responsibility for the present permanent display. Her main publications include the three-volume catalogue raisonné Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Collection, Istanbul (1986), and the twovolume catalogues Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection (1994) and The Anthony de Rothschild Collection of Chinese Ceramics (1996). Regina was also joint curator on the major exhibition China: The Three Emperors, 1662–1795 at the Royal Academy of Arts, London 2005–06.
