Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Belgium Celebrate Architect Joze Plecnik

BRUSSELS.- On the occasion of the European presidency of Slovenia The Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Belgium organize an exhibition devoted to the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik (1872-1957). Jože Plečnik was born in Ljubljana. In 1888 he follows lessons in carpentry in the secondary technical school of Graz. After his father’s death he was too young to take over the paternal workshop so he decided to go to Vienna. From 1894 to 1897 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts with the renowned architect of the Vienna Secession, Otto Wagner, for whom he would remain working until 1900. In 1911 he left to Prague in order to teach at the School of decorative arts, where he was appointed as head architect of the Prague Castle in 1920. He transformed this castle in a modern presidential and administrative building. Prague marks the top of his creation. In the same year he became a professor at the University of Ljubljana, a city where his influence is the most sensitive because he truly modifies its characteristic. His project for the Slovenian parliament, conceived as a cathedral of the liberty, has never been realized but it adorns the Slovenian coin of 10 cents.
