CLAREMONT, CA.- The Claremont Museum of Art is pleased to present First Generation: Art in Claremont, 1907–1957, which traces the art history of Claremont and the region in the first 50 years after the city’s incorporation in 1907. First Generation opens with a public reception from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2008 and runs through Sunday, April 27. Below is a list of educational programs and gallery talks to designed to complement and extend the impact of First Generation.

FREE FIRST FRIDAYS - Gallery admission is free from 5 to 8:30pm the first Friday of every month (coinciding with Claremont’s monthly Art Walk): Feb. 1, March 7, and April 4.

FAMILY SUNDAYS - Artmaking projects for the whole family, free and open to the public. Sunday, January 27 – Family Sunday: Special art project during the opening of First Generation. Also from 11am to 5pm on February 17, March 16 and April 20.

ALL EVENTS BELOW ARE FREE FOR MUSEUM MEMBERS, $5 FOR NON-MEMBERS (includes admission to First Generation). Saturday, February 2, 3pm – First Generation Curator Talk. Informal exhibition tour with guest curator Steve Comba.

Saturday, March 1, 3pm – The Way We Were - Author and local historian, Judy Wright, takes guests back to a Claremont that inspired artists featured in the exhibition. Executive Director William Moreno will introduce Judy Wright.

REMINISCENCES - Reminiscences is a series of in-gallery spotlight talks by those who remember the individuals in the exhibition. Included will be anecdotes, stories, and analysis of the people behind the art, by those who knew them. Guest curator Steve Comba will host each talk.

Saturday, February 16, 3pm - Jim Fuller, artist and professor emeritus at Scripps College, speaks about the influence of Milford Zornes, now celebrating his 100th birthday and still painting, on generations of painters, particularly those engaged in the use of watercolor.

Saturday, March 15, 3pm - John Edward Svenson, exhibiting artist and former student, shares stories about his mentor and close friend, sculptor Albert Stewart.

Saturday, April 5, 3pm - Artist James Hueter shares stories and discusses his former teacher, painter Henry Lee McFee.

Saturday, April 12, 3pm - Harrison McIntosh, internationally renowned ceramist, and his wife, Marguerite McIntosh, Founder of the Claremont Museum of Art, will share their personal recollections of their former neighbors in Padua Hills, artists Jean and Arthur Ames.

Saturday, April 26, 3pm - E. Gene Crain, collector and friend to many of the First Generation artists, shares stories of his friendship with Millard Sheets, Phil Dike, and others, and discusses the history of his collection, widely acknowledged as one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of work by artists from the “California School.”
