CAMBRIDGE, UK.- Kettle’s Yard brings to Cambridge Momentary Momentum: Animated Drawings, an international survey of animated drawing, originated by and first shown at Parasol unit of contemporary art, London. These short animated films explore a compelling relationship between drawing and the moving image that transcends specific cultural and artistic contexts.

Presented in two parts as a series of special installations and films screened in the gallery, the exhibition includes an animation video installation by Francis Alÿs, an animated film by William Kentridge, a black and white ‘moving picture’ by Kara Walker, and a short animation by David Shrigley.

In his film Tide Table, William Kentridge's chalk and charcoal drawings ebb and flow to a score based on two elegiac African songs. Francis Alÿs draws our attention to the mesmeric dance and rattle of a stick dragged across railings by a man as he walks along a London street. A surreal encouter with a horse in a launderette is enlivened by David Shrigley's deadpan humour. Kara Walker's silhouetted figures act out a darkly ironic view of black slavery and racism in a dramatic animation.

These will be shown alongside emerging artists whose work has not been widely seen in London. Japanese Taibaimo brings tattoos to life in a beautiful but unsettling evocation of mortality and decay. The French collective Qubo Gas (Laura Henno, Jef Ablézot and Morgan Dimnet) exploit the interactive technology of the internet to create a digital landscape that is constantly updated with new drawings. Other artists include Avish Khebrehzadeh (from Iran), Jochen Kuhn (from Germany), Zilla Leutenegger (from Switzerland), Christine Rebet (from France), Robin Rhode (from South Africa), Tabaimo and Naoyuki Tsuji (from Japan) and the French collective Qubo Gas (Laura.

Each part of the exhibition will be accompanied by a special themed programme of short films featuring the work of Robert Breer, Susanne Jirkuff, Arthur de Pins, Georges Schwizgebel, Paul Bush / Lisa Milroy, Michael Dudok de Wit, Brent Green and Takashi Ishida.
