WILMINGTON, DE.-The Delaware Art Museum will stay open until 5:00 p.m. over the next two weekends to accommodate as many visitors as possible in the final days of Seeing the City: Sloan’s New York, on view through January 20, 2008. The modified hours of operation are:

Saturday, January 12: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Sunday, January 13: noon – 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, January 19: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Sunday, January 20: noon – 5:00 p.m.

Once the exhibition closes here, it begins a year-long trip, beginning with the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg , PA , where it opens February 10, 2008. Next, Seeing the City: Sloan’s New York goes on display in the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago , and then to the Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem , NC .

The Delaware Art Museum , which holds the world’s largest collection of John Sloan’s art and archival materials thanks to the generosity of his widow Helen Farr Sloan, organized Seeing the City: Sloan’s New York. The Museum supplemented its Sloan collection by borrowing works from other institutions, including The Metro politan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art, as well as private collections.

After the exhibition completes its journey, several of the works will return to the Delaware Art Museum , but the borrowed pieces will go back to their respective owners. The paintings from private collections may never be available for public viewing again. This is the region’s last chance to enjoy Seeing the City: Sloan’s New York in its entirety.

A catalog, titled John Sloan’s New York, was produced for this exhibition and is full of Sloan’s art as well as informative essays. The New York Times Book Review issued high praise for the volume: “Its color reproductions are stunningly beautiful…an irresistible jewel box of a book, a treat for connoisseurs of early American modern art and New York City buffs alike” (Dec. 2, 2007, p. 46). John Sloan’s New York is available in the Museum Store for $40.00.
