MIAMI, FL.-The Furniture of Poul Kjærholm: Catalogue Raisonné is the first comprehensive reference work on one of the most important and profound talents of the twentieth century. Poul Kjærholm (Denmark, 19291980) was a self-proclaimed furniture architect, rather than simply a designer of furniture, whose unique aesthetic language combined industrial materials and techniques with a craftsmans approach to detail. Kjærholms furniture is both modern and historical, and the designs he conceived fifty years ago seem completely contemporary today. Destined to become a model for the field of design, The Furniture of Poul Kjærholm: Catalogue Raisonné is an instant classic and an essential reference for readers interested in furniture, interior design, and the history of modern architecture and design.
This authoritative book has been compiled with the assistance of the Kjærholm family and includes a foreword by Hanne Kærholm, Poul Kjærholms widow. The book has been designed by Takaaki Matsumoto, one of the most respected designers of art books in the world. Printed entirely in duotone black and white, the many archival photographs in the book are reproduced in the finest quality.
The catalogue raisonné has been authored by the worlds foremost authority on Kjærholm, American architect Michael Sheridan, an internationally recognized expert on Scandinavian architecture and design. In seventy entries, Sheridan documents, analyzes, and describes all of Kjærholms realized designs, including dimensions and materials of the furniture. The book contains a wealth of drawings and vintage photographs, as well as a biographical essay by Sheridan that traces and discusses the development of Kjærholms formal vision. The book features Keld Helmer-Petersens iconic photographs of Kjærholms work. Helmer-Petersen, a renowned modernist photographer, documented Kjærholms furniture and exhibitions during the three decades he was his creative partner. Supplementary information includes a timeline of production dates, manufacturer information, notes on materials and maintenance, and production stamps.
Advance copies will be available at Art Basel/Miami, Design Miami, and during the simultaneous Poul Kjærholm exhibitions at R Gallery (82 Franklin Street) and Sean Kelly Gallery (528 West 29th Street) from December 15, 2007 to February 2, 2008. The Furniture of Poul Kjærholm: Catalogue Raisonné is published in collaboration with R Gallery and Sean Kelly Gallery.
Poul Kjærholm was born in 1929 in northernmost Denmark. He struggled at school until he was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker at the age of fifteen. In the workshop, Kjærholm found his natural talent and excelled in his studies and practical training, and he was certified as a journeyman cabinetmaker. He began designing his iconic pieces in steel when he moved to Copenhagen in 1948. Around 1970, he began to experiment with wood construction. He designed a series of collaborations with Nils Fagerholt, developing new types of wood furniture, and refining his earlier work in steel. Throughout his career, Kjærholm worked closely with E. Kold Christensen, Denmarks leading furniture manufacturer of the time and the manufacturer of most of Kjærholms major works. In January 1980, Kjærholm was diagnosed with lung cancer, and he died three months later at his home, at the age of 51. In 1981, Kold Christensen sold the production rights for his collection of Kjærholm furniture to Fritz Hansen and many of those pieces remain in production today.
Michael Sheridan is an architect in New York City. His firm, Sheridan Architect, focuses on art-related commissions and his clients include major artists, collectors, and galleries. He is a noted scholar of Danish modern architecture and design and the leading authority on Poul Kjærholm. In 2006, he was the curator, exhibition architect, and author of the catalogue for the retrospective, Poul Kjærholm Furniture Architect, at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark.
