EAST LANSING, MI.- The Art Museum at Michigan State University will exhibit Iconic Images: New Photography Acquisitions in the Works on Paper Gallery from November 7 through December 14, 2007.
The museums photography collection continues to expand with iconic examples by several of the most significant photographers from the 19th century through the present, including Peter Henry Emerson, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, George Tice, Barbara Morgan. and Yousuf Karsh.
Each photographer made hundreds of images, many of them approaching or achieving greatness. But only a few sometimes even only one image is what you think of when you see or hear that artists name. For Peter Henry Emerson, the 19th century Father of Modern Photography, it is a man in a boat on a pond with the focus blurring slightly on the periphery as it does in vision. With Edward Weston, the curving shell that looks like a Brancusi sculpture, the glistening muscular green pepper or the sliced half of an artichoke spring immediately to mind, followed by dunes drawn with crisp black shadows. Barbara Morgan is best known for her photographs of dancers, such as this one of Martha Graham and Yousuf Karsh signature portrait is that of Winston Churchill, but our Georgia OKeefe is a close runner up. Approximately 20 acquisitions from the past three years are on view.
The Art Museum at MSU is located in Kresge Art Center , at the intersection of Physics and Auditorium Roads between the Alumni Chapel and the MSU Auditorium on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing , MI. Museum hours are Monday through Friday, 10 to 5 p.m., Thursday until 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. The museum is closed November 22-25 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
