NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, UK.- The University Gallery, Northumbria University, presents Maggi Hambling - Waves Breaking - New paintings, on view 15 September - 2 November 2007. In 2003 "Scallop", Maggi Hambling’s controversial sculpture to celebrate Benjamin Britten, was unveiled on Aldeburgh beach, Suffolk. In the pause between making the maquette and beginning work on the actual piece, Hambling began her now famous series of North Sea paintings, the first of which was shown as the Aldeburgh Festival Exhibition that year. Waves Breaking will be the first showing in the North of England of these powerful paintings. The relentless movement of the sea continues to absorb the artist as she skilfully seizes and distils the speed and drama of the waves as they build and dissolve.

A distinguished painter and sculptor (born in Suffolk in 1945), Maggi Hambling's work can be seen in the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Collection, the British Museum and many other public collections in the UK and abroad. Her sculpture "A conversation with Oscar Wilde" was unveiled in central London in 1998. Her work is represented by Marlborough Fine Art, London.
